What is TMJ and How Can Botox® Injections Help?

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), is a common condition that occurs when the joint where the jawbone meets the skull is injured or damaged.

If you suffer from TMJ, you may be experiencing jaw tension, pain or tenderness in the jaw, pain while chewing, locking of the jaw joint, headaches, earaches, and even neck pain. These symptoms can be quite painful and have a major negative impact on your quality of life.

Botox® injections from an expert in facial anatomy like Dr. Louis DeGironemo are a safe, non-invasive way to get relief from TMJ symptoms. Botox® relaxes the facial muscles around the jaw and reduces the tension, pressure, and involuntary jaw movements that contribute to TMJ.

If you have TMJ or are looking for jawline reduction/masseter slimming and you’re looking for treatment, schedule a consultation with Dr. DeGironemo at OMNI SCULPT MD today. You’ll be surprised at how fast you’ll feel relief!

How Do Botox® Injections for TMJ Work?

Botox®’s ability to reduce muscle activity and tension give it many cosmetic and medical applications, including the treatment of TMJ and its associated symptoms. Botox® works by blocking nerve signals that tell the facial muscles to contract. To treat TMJ, Botox® is injected directly into the muscles that control jaw movements – the masseter and temporalis muscles. This reduces muscle activity and tension in the area, reducing pressure on the nerves and strain on the jaw. Relaxing these muscles can reduce the various aches and pains caused by muscle tension and nerve irritation, stop the involuntary jaw clenching and teeth grinding, and make it easier to open and close the mouth without stiffness, clicking, or popping. Plus, Botox® can reduce the jawline, known as masseter slimming.

You can typically feel the effects of Botox® injections for TMJ in about 2 to 4 weeks after treatment, and the effects can last from 3 to 6 months. We recommend coming back regularly for injections every few months to maintain relief.
